The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857. For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.
With membership, experienced and aspiring alpinists benefit from a varied meets programme, regional lectures with notable guest speakers, reduced rates at many alpine huts, opportunity to apply for grants to support expeditions, significant discounts at many UK retailers, extensive networking contacts, access to the AC Library and maps - and more!

The Glan Dena hut is superbly situated at the foot of Tryan and Pen yr Ole Wen, avoiding the need to drive anywhere – it's all there from the door of the hut – just as well as the parking in Ogwen valley has become a real issue!
This meet is timed to enable alpine partners for the summer to meet up, make big plans, get out on some of the best rock in the UK and get that psyche sorted.
To help feed this, there is a theme for the meet with two general challenges and one more specific one…
For members wanting to focus on distance, ascent, descent and movement, the scrambling challenge is to complete at least 2,000ft (609.6m) of scrambling ascent/descent, plus at least two 3,000ft (914.4m) summits. The scrambling is measured in terms of the lengths of routes in either Steve Ashton or Garry Smiths books or the CC guidebooks. The scrambling can obviously be roped or unroped – those practising for the Alps may wish to aim for the 3’s/Mods/Diffs and climb in a more alpine style.
For members wanting to focus on climbing: 1,000ft (305m) of roped climbing spread across at least two crags, plus at least one 3,000ft (914.4m) summit. As we all know, the Ogwen valley is one of the best areas of the UK for enchainments of routes, so just pick your team's grade and get to it!
The specific challenge is one I’ve devised called the 'ten scrambles challenge’' which is a slight misnomer as once ascent scrambles and descent scrambles are included it can easily get to eleven or twelve or even more! It’s a remarkably logical circuit, about 1,100m of ascent with lots of variants possible and more info will be shared once you’ve signed up!
Of course, if you don’t want to be in on the theme, you are very welcome to do your own thing!
If you do take part in any of the challenges, then expect a mention in dispatches!
Cost per night is £14 payable in advance to secure your place. State clearly how many nights you want and which nights, and if you would like an extra on Thursday 5th let me know and I’ll check with the MAM hut booking sec.
